On December 16, 2025, Akmaral Sharipbayevna Alnazarova, Minister of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, paid a working visit to the pediatric oncohematology unit of the University Medical Center (UMC).

During the visit, a meeting was held with young patients, their parents, and medical staff. The discussion focused on improving the quality of medical care, the importance of psychological support for children and families, and the role of physicians and nursing staff in treatment and recovery.

UMC’s oncohematology unit provide comprehensive specialized care to children with oncological and hematological diseases, including diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. Modern international protocols and high-tech treatment methods are used in clinical practice.

According to state statistics, the number of newly diagnosed childhood cancers was 614 cases in 2023 and 638 cases in 2024. The overall incidence rate of malignant neoplasms among the child population (per 100,000 children) ranged from 8.6 to 9.4 in 2020–2024.

The largest proportion of childhood cancers are leukemia, central nervous system tumors, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, soft tissue sarcomas, as well as nephroblastoma and neuroblastoma.

UMC provides a full range of specialized care for children with oncohematological diseases. Treatment is comprehensive and includes drug therapy (chemotherapy), radiation therapy, surgery, and stem cell transplantation—autologous, related, or unrelated, depending on clinical indications. In recent years, immunotherapy and targeted therapy methods have been actively introduced into clinical practice.

Survival rates depend on the disease entity and are consistent with international data: 89.7% for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, 83.1% for leukemia, 83.4% for retinoblastoma, and 74.2% for nephroblastoma. This multidisciplinary approach ensures high-quality and effective medical care.

The working visit underscores the state’s priority attention to children’s health, the development of high-tech medicine, and increasing the availability of specialized medical care.
